Phase 1 of 5 Β· Power step into the skill

Hurdle Entry

The hurdle is a low, fast power step that converts run speed into a long, aggressive lunge β€” the foundation every round-off is built on.

Phase tutorial Β· how to drill it

Common mistakes

  • Hurdle too high β€” wasted air time, loss of horizontal speed.
  • Arms drop or split during the hurdle, killing the connection to the lunge.
  • Short, choppy hurdle that lands under the body instead of long in front.
  • Looking down at the floor early, dropping the chest.
  • Slowing down into the hurdle instead of carrying speed through it.

Technique cues

  • Stay low through the hurdle β€” it is not a leap, it is a power step.
  • Arms drive overhead by lock-out, biceps glued to the ears.
  • Front leg extends long and aggressive β€” reach for the floor, do not jump up.
  • Back leg whips forward fast to set up the lunge.
  • Eyes stay forward on the line, not down at the floor.
