Phase 1 of 5 · Continental, hands up

Volley Ready Position

The volley game is won at the net before the ball even arrives. A high, alert ready position with the continental grip is non-negotiable.

Phase tutorial · how to drill it

Common mistakes

  • Eastern forehand grip — backhand volley becomes impossible.
  • Racquet head dropped below the wrist or hands.
  • Weight on the heels — late on every passing shot.
  • Standing tall, knees straight — no first-step explosion.
  • Watching the ball instead of the opponent's racquet face.

Technique cues

  • Continental grip — same for forehand and backhand volley.
  • Racquet held high, head at chest or face level.
  • Non-dominant hand cradles the throat for quick prep on either side.
  • Weight forward, knees bent, on the balls of the feet.
  • Eyes glued to the opponent's racquet — read the contact.

Tip: use / or number keys to walk through the phases.
